Credits and Exemptions

1. What is the difference between "credit" and "exemption"?

Credits and exemptions recognise previous university (college) education in a particular area. In order to claim either a credit or exemption you must show proof of previous study. For most subjects you will also be asked to provide a detailed outline of the subject you have completed and an academic transcript.

A credit for a subject is granted for prior academic study at the Master's level or Professional Accounting Studies. A credit means that you do not have to complete assessment for that subject, and the total number of units you will be required to complete is reduced. For example, Tomoko has completed a Masters of Accounting degree. She would therefore receive a credit for the subject Accounting (ACCT71-500). She would be awarded credit of a full unit (1.0 credit points for ACCT71-500) and would only need to complete the remaining 11 credit points to complete her MBA (total of 12 credit points).

An exemption for a subject is granted for substantial prior undergraduate study in a core area of management (usually a major in an undergraduate degree). An exemption means that you do not have to complete assessment for that subject, but you will be required to complete an additional subject with an equivalent credit point rating. For example, Yasuhiro, who holds an undergraduate degree majoring in Economics, would receive an exemption for Microeconomics (ECON70-501) and Macroeconomics (ECON70-502). He would receive an exemption for these two subjects (total 1.0 credit points) and could choose to complete an additional subject equivalent to 1.0 credit point. This additional subject may be taken on-campus at Bond University or at any other approved university.

2. When should I apply for credit/exemption?

You should specify requests for credit or exemption in your initial application form. Any request for credit or exemption after this will not be accepted. This includes study that you have not yet completed. Therefore, if you are currently studying at another university or college, or are waiting on your results, you should make this clear in your initial application.
